Air refueling exercises??

Postby m0lsx » Thu Aug 11, 2016 1:28 pm

For the past few nights I have noticed an Airbus 330 Voyager from Brize Norton circling for hours over the north Sea in an an area North of Norfolk & East of Humberside.

I have heard nothing on airband. Civil or military. But maybe I have just missed it. However it could be worth listening for if anyone is interested.

The RAF Voyager is based on the modern Airbus A330-200 passenger aircraft and, in conjunction with our Boeing C-17A Globemaster III fleet, provides the RAF with Strategic Air Transport and Aeromedical capability. In addition, Voyager is an extremely effective Air-to-Air Refuelling asset, which is utilised to enable a variety of RAF aircraft to operate for extended periods.

The area its working in is known as AARA8 ( air to air refuelling area) and is used frequently by USAF KC135s working out of mildenhall , frequencies to monitor for activity in this area are :-

315.825
264.125
362.1
290.975
363.325
306.4
Plus the USAF AAR frequencies which can often be heard being passed to the aircraft by Swanwick Mil on 259.6 to enable the receivers to contact the tankers
286.6
295.4
296.6
308.0
394.6
364.275
NB this list is not complete as there are many other frequencies used by USAF "coronet" flights of fighter aircraft in transit from Europe to the USA and vice versa who use frequencies designated for AAR on the western side of the atlantic and continue to remain in use for the duration of the flight

Most of the RAF refueling in area 8 tend to use the area 8 primary frequency of 264.125 (but not always) as was the case most nights last week.
