Scanner Receiver Clash

Postby andy5600 » Mon Mar 17, 2014 2:20 pm

Hello all,

Have set up my alinco dx-r8 in a new spot in the house, beside/near my two other scanners x2 gre psr-295`s.
so could do my listening all in one place, So far so good,

The psr`s sit in the window, each has a different kind of aerial, alinco sits a couple of feet away with its aerial coming through side of window

But whenever the dx-r8 is on the 295`s lock onto a seemingly random channel (in search mode) then will not budge off it no matter what squelch setting is put on. Switch the alinco off and the scanners go back searching

Anyone have any ideas what is causing this or have came across the same thing, or have any idea to stop it.

*Did some fiddling this morning and it seems it happens around the kinloss rescue frequency
between 5677 &5685 (nothing transmitting)above and below this is ok?, Not tried much others yet. Yes happens on other freqs too.

Thanks,
Andy5600

IF...Internally (generated) Frequency..
It is how they know a TV is on & what channel is being watched with the TV detector vans...

Certainly a right pain, means switching off, either or. no way of screening then

Distance between the scanners work..What you have is not uncommon, but normally it is possible to use two scanner side by side with no issues..It seems that your Alinco is the issue, & other than shielding it from the GRE there is nothing you can do.
I have had a check & my GRE 295 (which I keep downstairs beside the PC,) works fine upstairs even when sitting beside or on my other scanners.
Do not do anything to cause your alinco to over heat, or get too warm. But if you have your Alinco in a shelf type environment, simply putting some tin foil between the scanners, so the GRE is above the Alinco could solve the issue.

Hi, thanks for that,

when not being used.

Page 35 of your owner manual for the PSR-295.
This allows you to scan..PLUS monitor a channel for any activity...Using Priority, means your scanner works normally until there is activity on the priority channel & then it immediately switches to your priority channel.

Priority
In addition to the 1,000 programmable memory channels,
the scanner has one priority channel.
With the priority feature, you can scan through programmed
channels and still not miss an important or interesting
transmission on a specific channel. When priority
is turned on, the scanner checks that channel every 2
seconds, and stays on the channel if there is activity until
the activity stops.
To program a frequency in the priority channel:
1. Press MANUAL.
2. Use the number keys to enter the channel number
which contains the frequency you want to program as
the priority channel. Then press MANUAL again.
3. Press FUNC then PRI. Pri Channel blinks on the bottom
line.
To program the priority channel directly:
1. Press PGM.
2. Press PRI.
3. Enter the frequency you want to enter into the priority
channel, then press ENTER.
To turn on the priority feature, press PRI. P:On appears
on the bottom line. If the scanner detects activity on the
priority channel, Pri Chan appears.
Note: If you change the receive mode at a priority channel
to DPL or CTCSS, P:DC or P:CT appears instead of
P:On.
To turn off the priority feature, press PRI. P:On changes
to P:Off

When I first found out this was happening I tried locking out the effected channels
on the psr`s, but when the effected channel was locked out, psr`s would go back to scan then just go to another programmed channel where the interference from the r8 was strongest.

Just a thought, but are a couple of cheap speakers the answer?? As like that your PSR's will have some distance between them & the Alinco, but the audio output will be in the same location..

Ah a bit of lateral thinking, that could be a possibility, just need to find out how far apart they need to be.
but the psr`s work best in the window, move them away and the signal starts dropping off.
Looking into fixing the aerials out side a bit higher up and joining with coax not sure if this would work (cheap bnc mini mag or gutter mount onto a bit of angle screwed to window frame?? (for the one with the W881)

How about simply standing the scanner in the window with a piece of tinfoil covered cardboard between the room & the scanners, it need not do more than shield the scanners & their antennas from the Alinco but it should work....And yes it may not be the prettiest solution, but if it works, you could then look at neater solutions..
