Random wire or Discone antenna?.

Postby mike43 » Tue Dec 06, 2016 4:17 pm

Just scrolling through some of the broadcast bands this morning from 4am to 6.30am on my Tecsun S2000 receiver, I did not use my random wire antenna, I used my my scanner antenna (1300 Discone). These are some of the stations received loud and clear on the Romney Marsh. Some stations have more powerful transmitters than others. The stations are quite a distance away and in various directions. On another day receiving might be different again with other stations being louder and clearer. I will try the same exercise with the random wire antenna and see what goes on. I have to say the Discone is a lot quieter than the random wire as far as RFI goes. I did change the wire arrangement and took the 40 foot loft section wire out as it might be picking up a lot of junk from the AC wiring running around the loft. Thanks to Alan m0Isx for that advice. I terminated the wire at the entrance to the loft and joined a length RG213 coax I had laying around in the workshop, to the radio via the ATU I made. Haven't a clue about baluns and the like yet, so I put a 2 metre length of 6 mm cable from the shielding of the coax to a big tub with a bay tree in it that is quite damp all the time. I also have a set of copper stakes outside the radio room and a connection to the radiator pipe which has continuity to the street stop tap. The Discone still seems quieter. The random wire is not so noisy now that the loft bit has been snipped off. I suppose what I am trying to say is is it worth all the random wire and stuff and maybe a balun, when the Discone seems to be doing the job on it's own without a matcher. Any advice will be appreciated. Mike.

The Twente receiver uses a one meter long whip with good results & that is exactly what your 1300 is, a one meter whip with legs.
Things like radiators can be dodgy to connect to interference wise, even as earths.
Personally I only use a few meters (10 meters maximum) of wire & I find that works well for me. Portable radios are designed to work on small telescopic antennas, so too much length & they quickly overload.

From my own experience over many years. My first scanner was a crystal controlled one I got from the states about 1979 time to the ones I have today. I have tried So many Discone types From the early Tandy ones ( Radio Shake ) to some real fancy/expensive ones. My conclusion is that there performance is very poor. So you ask what do I use. I use 2 Aerials one on each end of my house. One on top of a 20 foot x2inch mast a Triband collinear, The other one is a home made vertical on the other end of the house. On a smaller mast 10 foot by 2 inch. Very low loss coax from both into a home made Diplexer. Plus after many years of getting it right for my own location. There is not at lot worth listening to if your not into Aircraft.

Thanks for that Alan. I love making different types of antennas. I also enjoy the aircraft bands. I made a simple dipole a couple of weeks ago and couldn't believe the amount of airband signals I was picking up on a couple bits of wire. Fascinating for me. I have civil airband frequencies loaded into my scanner, and hoping to load some Mil'Air bands. Don't know if my area on the Romney Marsh will pick up many Mil' Air down here? or are they everywhere. I live about a mile from Lydd airport which does a lot of military refueling of the helicopters and the occasional C130. Any advice as to other air bands would be appreciated. Mike.

I have not been around the Romney Marsh area for years. So it's just a guess. BUT I would assume that you get plenty of mil Air activity over the Channel. I would also imagine that you will get some activity from the Thames Estuary too.
