I found the above link via Southgate ARC's news site & thought it may interest others here..

simplified description of the defunct MOULD radio system. The original phase provided one system per home defence sub-region and employed 120 hilltop sites. A later contract extended this with the addition of County networks bringing the number of separate networks to ninety and increased the hilltop sites to 150. Based on an article in 'The Wire' circa 1986, by A F Carter with the addition of my own observations.

I became interested in the UK Civil Defence for the Cold War, as a result of working as a engineer for 'Post Office Telephones' later privatised and renamed 'British Telecom'. Between 1978 and 1981 I maintained the early warning equipment and visited ROC posts in part of North Northamptonshire and South Leicestershire. At the time I never disclosed this information even to my closest friends. Now twenty years have passed since the Cold War ended the Internet provides a good medium to disseminate the details of these defunct systems.

It was used more by radio engineers testing and maintaining it, than by actual users!
I reserve the right to ignore people who have made no attempt to the read the manual, and expect others to do it for them.

I sometimes do the radio checks at the local county hall, the coax currently in use was used for MOULD. Quite interesting.

We did a couple of combined exercises with mobiles all over Suffolk, and the system installed at Lowestoft, on the removed tower next to my house in Lowestoft didn't cover anywhere as well as the one that was just outside a little village in the 'Saints'. Can't remember exactly where it was but there was an old air base close by - this would be to the south of Bungay. It was the same tower type as the one that was here - 50m. It had really good coverage. As a result - Mould was never installed on the Lowestoft one, but was on the other.

Set on a plateau above the Waveney Valley about two miles south of Bungay and just beyond the village of Flixton, is the site of Bungay airfield.

No, not Bungay - (or Flixton as it was known), but I have found it - if you look on Google maps, Flixton is now pretty well dug up, but you can see where it was, then go south towards metfield. There's a very clear aerodrome on the map, and below it a camel park!! If you go south a little bit, on a thin bit of road is the tower - you can see it on street view. The building I remember is missing and there are external racks instead - the tower is the same one.
