145.7125 - U S A ??

Postby Assassin of Silence » Thu Sep 21, 2017 1:29 pm

I'm currently in my van with my 75xlt listening on 145.712 and I'm picking up three guys in America. I am in quite an elevated position but I never expected to hear this. Is this a regular occurrence, picking up USA on a hand held scanner ?

Just a guess but it's 145.7125 & an Echolink or similar internet gateway. So what you were hearing was people chatting into a repeater via the internet.

Maybe a daft question ( I'm new to this ) but would that be possible if they were mobile ? I lost one of the three but the other two were definitely on the move. One heading to a fire dept meeting the other heading to some river.

Yes it's possible. Anyone licensed can work into one Echolink repeater & out of another. You use the DTMF keypad on the microphone to dial up the repeater you want via the repeater you are local too. Working into one repeater & out of another.
I have chatted to a pizza Delivery Guy in the Bondi Beach area of Sydney Australia whilst mobile here in the UK. And multiple stations can use a Echolink repeater in the same way they can a conventional amateur radio repeater & 7125 is a repeater output frequency.

I was in Scott Hay, Stoke-on-Trent at the time in quite an elevated position looking out over the Cheshire plain. I'm guessing but I'd say 30-40 miles from Manchester.

From previous answers it seems the internet / repeater was responsible, thanks everyone. I'm learning things every day...
