Alans source of diagrams is very extensive he never seems to use the same one twice , welcome to the forum Michael.

The bands that often use two frequencies are the business radio and the marine bands where the mobile/ handheld/remote stations transmit on one frequency and the base / shore / main stations transmit on another which is classed as semi duplex operation . The main reason for this arrangement is to assist the "main " station to retain control of the remotes be it mobiles or handhelds . If the remotes can talk directly to each other there could be confusion as to where an instruction came from, however nb there are simplex channels in the marine band though for ship to ship comms, and a few full duplex channels where the operation is like a telephone conversation .

There is a system called talk-through where the control can allow mobiles to talk directly to each other and was used extensively by the police (back in the days pre TETRA )which retransmitted the remotes transmissions on the main station frequency , the control tx acting like a repeater in some instances

I would like to say hello and give a brief introduction. Name is Steve.Recently moved to winsford, cheshire, to be near children and grandchildren. lived in #warwickshire , now retired. Since moving to cheshire have been visiting ringway for spotting and taking photos. I am a keen photographer with an interest in aircraft. recently took hobby one step further acquiring a EZ133XLT scanner. my research said to get a better ariel than the product rubber duck, which I did.
Must say how happy I am, being able to get twoway commincations between ATC and pilot. from quite a range of controllers. Can anyone shed any light why the scanner does not pick up any marine pmr vh comms. I live about 30miles from the mersey and 10miles from manchester ship canal. dont seem to pick anything local on pmr.

Hi all..Not sure if I introduced myself when I first joined. Name is Tim and am located at Wetherby in West Yorkshire. I have had a long break from radio. I am a licensed ham and like many others started out on CB in the late 70,s. I do love listening in to the shortwave bands and airbands. Hoping to catch up with the airwaves soon.
Thanks all. 73 de m3swl

Hello Ruud, back in the 80's there was a well know postal address used by a lot of the SW free radio stations in Utrecht.
