Looking for a second hand scanner not to worried about age or condition as long as its in full working order the start of digital would be handy - Think OAP and only a pension - easy to use - don't need 500 memories in 2500 banks - base or handheld up to around £70.00 is this a dream - made in China as all things seem to be now.

Two suggestions.
1..How about a section for discussing & reviewing specific scanner models we own in??? It would be a good first point of reference for anyone looking at a new scanner.
A sticky thread at the top of the section could make the point that not everything sold as a scanner is a receiver only thus helping to avoid any confusion for new comers to the hobby between transceivers that scan & which are sometimes sold on ebay etc as scanners & receivers that scan. It may help a newcomer make an informed choice without inadvertently breaching any rules or accidentally transmitting where they should not.
Suggestion 2. Would it be a good idea to make this a sticky so that it does not go down the page??

Is it just me, but with all the demand and talk about the new TYT 2017 DMR, very few people actually got one yet, and already new purchasers are asking around the internet for code plugs! Presumably written by a kind soul who might not yet have actually got one of these radios. Why would you buy a brand new, feature packed, unknown, complicated radio and expects somebody else to have done all the hard work, for a very small user base so far.

Today's hobby is full of people who seem unprepared to do ANY work for themselves. People complain because they cannot buy every single thing they need off the shelf - and if they can, they complain it's too expensive. That's a bit of a rant of my chest, by the way!

Does anyone with some time on their hands and are prepared to help a scanner newbie live anywhere near Hailsham East Sussex. I have recently bought a Uniden ubc125xlt. I bought it from Radio world and they have put on a load of frequencies but my PC is rubbish so not sure wether to invest in some software, and what to do with it if I did.

Is it necessary to earth a radio scanner,if yes can anyone tell me how to do it

Earths are not a simple subject, partly because not everything that we call an earth, is an earth in the same sense as other earths.
But assuming you are operating a VHF/UHF scanner & that you have a normal type of scanner antenna with no lightning (surge) arrestor in line. Then no, there is no need to use an earth.
And not wishing to confuse things. BUT..... Unless you know what you are doing with electrics take great care with earths, as modern houses. Say those built after 1980, could or will have what is called Protective Multiple Earthing.
PME means several houses are earthed all together & it can cause us real issues if we earth our equipment without knowing what we are doing.
