Just a quick note to let all here know of a little tried and tested mod that I have tested with my frequency counter with my Baofeng Uv5r,

I have tuned it into the following with help from the Chirp softwear./

385 - 524 Mhz
129 - 182 Mhz,

I didn't know if this was common knowledge so posted any way.

What test equipment did you use to conduct this test with & what checks & results did get for unwanted emissions?? I have seen these radios on the bench in standard format, but never when altered & would be interested in any details you have as result of this test.

Hello,

Being a very beginner in this field a novice if you like I hope I did this correctly,

Firstly I went into Chirp and I opened the settings menu, from there you can alter the frequencies,
I then had my frequency counter to see if I was transmitting and I was,
I then had to go out on the street and tried until I came up with the frequencies shows which was a bit time consuming.

You can alter higher and lower but it does not guarantee any transmitting,
It works so this is good.

So you know your radio is covering those frequencies because you tried without taking the sensible step of using a dummy load :shocker: :shocker: :shocker:
129 mhz is within the civil airband & 385 mhz is within the military airband.

That is the least of it. If it was checked on airband..Mil or civil, any bets on how the authorities will respond??

Three stories that come to mind, are.

Schoolboy, Nickie Chamberlain, was surprised when Government officials arrived at his bedroom and confiscated his television aerial because it was interfering with planes landing at a nearby airport.
''Our field engineers regularly work with National Air Traffic control and were able to trace the signal back to this little boys bedroom.

Plus..

A TEENAGER has been arrested and charged on suspicion of “trolling” workers using private radio networks across the Capital.
The 18-year-old is suspected of intercepting several frequencies –
He was detained for more than 20 offences under the Wireless Telegraphy Act,
Ofcom’s spectrum engineering and enforcement director, Mark Walls, said deliberate radio interference can cause “severe disruption and distress”
The Wireless Telegraphy Act covers a range of issues, from radio licencing to criminal matters. Offences relating to illegal or unauthorised use of radio can attract fines of up to £5000 and two years’ imprisonment.

Also & in the past few weeks.

Mmmmm, Not good by the comments left,
There is a section in Chirp how which you can enable so that no Tx-ing can be done on the channels so think I will do this, Is it ok to listen on them frequencies does any one know.

I joined the forum yesterday and not sure of the rules yet. I have a receiver for sale but cannot find a sales thread on the site. Can I advertise it on the site or is that not possible ?

theoretically it is illegal to listen / monitor any frequency except amateur radio, licence free transmissions eg 446 PMR or CB and broadcasts (be it commercial or Navigational) without authority or an appropriate licence .
If you hold a RYC certificate you can monitor marine channels when afloat .
if you hold a UK business light licence you can monitor the appropriate business light channels ( previously called UK General licence) but not disclose anything you may inadvertently hear that was not intended for your use

monitoring of civil airband is tolerated but still illegal . if you are caught monitoring any frequencies you are unauthorised to, Ofcom can take you to court and the equipment can be seized and if you use or relay by any means the information heard you can suffer additional penalties the severities of which are dependant on the nature of the offence .

It would be very unadvisable to monitor government agencies be it civil or military and very foolish to transmit on any frequency that may endanger anyone or effect other legitimate users although in matters of risk to life there is a clause that allows this ie to summon help in an extreme emergency .

I have no doubt this forum is monitored by various authorities as the internet can be accessed by nearly 90 percent of the population these days even the spooks , they have ears and eyes too and big sticks

I live near Cardigan in Wales and use Flightradar to track the aircraft overhead. I have just purchased a Uniden UBC125XLT with a R-881 antenna. A long time ago I used to live in Cheltenham and regularly listened to airband. My question is, should I expect to hear aircraft on the above kit or do I need a more powerful antenna. If so please could you suggest a name and source? I am happy for it to be a static antenna fixed to my house. Needless to say, I can't currently pick up aircraft chatter.
