Police Car Antenna help

Postby simonfoy » Fri Nov 25, 2016 4:36 am

Hi all

My son is making a short film (film and media student in Manchester) and wants to use my car as a police car. It is a Volvo V70. It looks the part and I've managed to find blue reflectors for the side that are magnetic and can be removed. I am struggling however with the antennas they have on the rear.
I thought some kind of rectangular metal plate (about 20 inches long x 15 deep) with magnetic feet on each corner so it can be easily removed from the car. It needs to have about 6 antenna placed on it, either screwed on or magnetically stuck onto the plate strong enough so when the vehicle is moving they won't come off, although it won't be at speed 30mph the most) None of the antennas need any wiring at all as they are just for show. It can be put on and removed without fuss

He has checked with the police and they said providing it doesn't say POLICE and there are no flashing blue lights the antennas shouldn't be a problem and we won't get arrested for impersonating an officer, not that I thought we would but he has to check for his Uni as they have to fill in relevant paperwork, risk assessments etc.

Does anyone know the type of antenna we could use, size, where to buy the parts from etc He's left it with me but I am a little clueless about what will look authentic. It is going to be entered into an international short film competition so needs to look good.

Can anyone please help or could someone make such a thing and I will purchase it?

Thank so much
Simon

Have a search on ebay for " magmount antennas " -Should give you some ideas/options.You could always just buy a mag mount for the base and make up some fake antennas to look authentic and keep costs down.

If you look on eBay can you give me an idea of the antennas they use so looks are authentic? I think the police don't have long antenna they use shorter one, or am I wrong? Thank so much

The cheapest, if time scale isn't that close would be to buy some mini mag mount VHF quarter waves, and cut the mag mount cable off, and stick them in a diamond on the top - to replicate the trackers, with perhaps one or two towards the rear of the roof. Lots of aerials taking the eye away from the lack of blue lights. Most police vehicles have roof mounted quarter waves, or ⅝ over quarter waves. Taxi style aerials are rare on the rear.

To be honest it's not the antennas that make the Police vehicles stand out. Only the traffic cars that have the DF kit (4 antennas needed at least.) And that is only for those cars which are equipped to find stolen cars with trackers fitted & not all traffic cars can do that.
The current Tetra radios do not need an external antenna, so most Police vehicles have few if any antennas fitted.
It's things like dashboard clutter due to the various bits & pieces the Police fit, such as ANPR & the fact that the boot is full of cones & all the other bits, that make their vehicles sit lower at the back than most other cars on the road, that make Police cars stand out.
Often even the cameras fitted are discreet & far from obvious.

For example..

I would simply put, say 3 micro mags on the roof & leave it at that.

As a magician, I would say. DO NOT, try to copy what you see on a Police vehicle. Try to suggest it & leave it to the viewer to fill in the gaps. I could could go into detail & tell you the psychology behind this, but basically. You want to exploit the human minds pattern recognition weaknesses. The mind will see part of something & fill in the gaps, due to previous experience. And allow the mind to fool it's self, as nothing is stronger, than what someone else's mind tells them is true. So do not do the work yourself, let them do it for you.

Thanks everyone you've been really helpful. Can anyone post me a link to the antennas I need on ebay please.

I think I will put the three on the back, as suggested, and leave it like that. For the film it needs to be a little obvious it is a police car, It is being shown in america to go into the international short film awards. Last year he won the Channel 4 one so here's keeping my fingers crossed,

Thanks again, much obliged to you all

I would not normally recommend moonraker. But currently they have micro mags at £9.99 each, but just for the weekend. They are small, but a complete antenna, with no need to buy a separate base.

Or something like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1M-3Ft-Digital- ... 2368356891

(I know it's US ebay but item can be shipped from HK to EU rather than Merkinland)

Cut them to assorted sizes for that extra porcine look.

Be aware that they won't stay on a car at 70mph

as an aside - they work just as well as the moonraker as a receiving aerial.

Possibly the whip on those would be a bit thin to notice at a distance on a moving car on film. I would try and find some old gsm aerials. Search eBay for panorama body mount
Whistler WS1098
Motorola SL4000
CS701 VHF DMR
Bumfu@k UV-5
Some old random toot
