Cant Hear Anything 125XLT

Postby andy1t72 » Sun Dec 25, 2016 12:06 pm

Hi guys
just got my 125XLT scanner for xmas
followed a youtube video on manually programming frequencies into it
so ive used bank 1 and stored about 15 heathrow frequencies into it
pressed scan to scan all those frequencies and cannot hear a damn thing (yes volume is up)
i live 20 miles from heathrow and checked flight radar and aircraft are going over
so why am i not hearing anything , this is also my first scanner

Fear not - you don't have one, so forget it.

Let's assume that you have entered those frequencies and are not hearing anything - so you could possibly simply be in an RF shadow - as in just by bad luck, none of these are audible - unlikely. However - move onto some other stuff. Look up your local ham repeater, even if it's not being used, in a 15 minute window, you should hear a local one pop up and send some kind of ID - probably in Morse Code. So Google amateur repeaters, and programme any local ones in. FM, of course. Next thing would be to search things likely to be heard on xmas day. Not much really - possibly taxis? FM again, search between 165 and 170MHz. Keep looking!

Even in a hole. He should be receiving one side of those.
How is the squelch set?
Turn it fully left. At this point you will hear a lot of static.
Now turn the squelch right until the noise stops & the radio scans.
The further the squelch is turned to the right, the stronger the signal needs to be.
The more to the left the more you will hear. But you will also get false stops, where the static noise is a little louder than on other channels.
The trick is to get the squech set so the radio scans, but does not stop on too many, if any static.
Also are you scanning Bank 1 which is programmed?
Personally I think I would be listening to the tower frequencies individually with the squelch fully off, if my radio were not stopping on anything.

ive turned squelch to 0 loads of static so turned it till static stopped which is number 2 ,, im scanning bank 1 which i have manually programmed 15 heathrow and london city frequencies into and hearing absolutly jack all i thought id at least hear something as im 20 mile from heathrow and checked on flight radar and aircraft are flying over , been searching and searching for taxi frequencies for the berkshire area as they will be operating xmas day but cannot for the life of me find any , ive just purchased the uk scanning directory off this site , im nearing the point of using a hammer

Christmas Day things are going to be quiet. But I would expect you to hear something on air band. It may be 10 to 20 minutes between hits. But you should b hearing something even if it is just the aircraft.

Start with the basic checks, check you can get a local radio station on it eg heart 106.00 - 108.00, that will prove the scanner and antenna are working.
