Height matters, as does electrical noise & you may find that by going upstairs you get away from most of those electrical items creating that noise. As well as giving you extra height.
VHF & UHF are what is called line of sight. Or to the horizon. So the higher you are the further the horizon is from you. Added to that is the fact that VHF & UHF are obstructed by things like buildings, hills, trees, cars, anything. So height limits the number of those between you & the transmitting antennas.
Take a look at a Nagoya antenna. I have various antennas, including antennas I paid over £30 for over 10 years ago & my last Nagoya cost me £10 including postage about a year ago & they are every bit as good as anything else I have.
I have had both a £10 Nagoya & a £30 plus Diamond for over 10 years. And both perform as well as the other & both still look as good as the other. So from a value for money rating I would recommend the Nagoya & although the Diamond is a better quality antenna. I am not sure it lasts longer & it certainly does not perform better & in all probability are made in the same country by similar manufacturers. So cheap far eastern is not always a poorer option.

fantastic information thankyou , do i get a BNC connector so it just plugs straight onto the scanner as the factory one does , and do i buy any nagoya will anyone do the trick

You just need a antenna with a BNC connector at it's base & it then becomes a like for like replacement.
Buy a database from Kimmy JS19 via http://ukscanningdirectory.co.uk/

I find the Diamond RH77CA works well & has a BNC connector.Had it for number of years & is very much better than a standard antenna.I find marine band on it works well.
yes it is. Remember moving away from a window & more inside your property you will get weaker or no signal.Even so I do find the antenna good.Do not get an active antenna or a preamp, for your location it will not help & may make things worse.I'm quite local to you.

is the BNC Connector the same as the one that comes with the scanner

Mate, get yourself a Garex Flexi-Whip or a SlimG antenna from Spectrum Communications. The standard rubber aerial is awful and good for f-all. :shocker:

I have both and get superb 2 way comms from both Gatwick and Heathrow. Have a look on Radio & Scanner Mods Manuals and Tips page on this site and you will see my write ups for both. :walkietalkie:

Let us know how you get on.
