Height matters, as does electrical noise & you may find that by going upstairs you get away from most of those electrical items creating that noise. As well as giving you extra height.
VHF & UHF are what is called line of sight. Or to the horizon. So the higher you are the further the horizon is from you. Added to that is the fact that VHF & UHF are obstructed by things like buildings, hills, trees, cars, anything. So height limits the number of those between you & the transmitting antennas.
Take a look at a Nagoya antenna. I have various antennas, including antennas I paid over £30 for over 10 years ago & my last Nagoya cost me £10 including postage about a year ago & they are every bit as good as anything else I have.
I have had both a £10 Nagoya & a £30 plus Diamond for over 10 years. And both perform as well as the other & both still look as good as the other. So from a value for money rating I would recommend the Nagoya & although the Diamond is a better quality antenna. I am not sure it lasts longer & it certainly does not perform better & in all probability are made in the same country by similar manufacturers. So cheap far eastern is not always a poorer option.
