Glider night fliying?

Postby m0lsx » Sat Apr 29, 2017 10:51 pm

I have just been having a scan around the UK on FlightRadar24 & a Glider, G-DEWR is apparently night flying near Stroud.
Presumably they have a good battery system to run instruments, lights etc.
I must admit, I have never seen anything about gliders flying at night before.

Yep show up on FLARM. I saw 2 Fox type Gliders do a display last year with lights and wing flares! Was very good. Some try to do 24 hours up in the air!

Didn't know glider pilots ever wasted time with IFR flying. The common sense in me says that it's a but risky?

My flying friend says technically this is night VFR, not IFR. If you can see the street lights and villages etc, then technically you can see the ground! Not sure about the high voltage cables across the field you need to land on though?

As I understand it, power lines are a viability problem for helicopter pilots even during the day due to vibration. So maybe it's no worse for glider pilots at night than helicopter pilots during the day.
What I found interesting was the low heights of the gliders, one was at around 300 feet & thats low enough for structures to get in the way & gives little height above building that do not need lights fitted, so a small error in altitude could be anything but a small error.

PPLs can't fly in clouds, because the rule about seeing the ground prevents this one - yet being able to see the ground by streetlights is OK? Birds don't fly by night - seems pretty sensible really?

Have you ever heard David Gunson's LP? He was a ATC in the Midlands & did after dinner speeches & he mentions the Birds don't.... in at least one place.

I did one of his after dinner speeches in Norwich in the early 80s - great bloke and very funny. Back then I think he was one of the really in demand speakers. Blaster Bates was another - scruffy fella who used to sit a stick of gelignite on the top table. No idea if it was real, or marzipan! Did Jim Davidson on tip table with the Bishop of Norwich - that was a fun one!
