Yep but Ofcom do use some silly allocations.

I take it this license free band in 70cm is allocated by The ITU who consult Ofcom, and the fact it is Europe wide makes things worse really as ITU have set the Europe wide band for Hams at 430.000 MHz - 440.000 MHz so interference problems were sure to come up.

Going back to Ofcom I think they are just a bit lazy, there are lots of chunks in the spectrum going unused. Why they allocate the same frequencies in the same or neighbouring towns (in sparsely popular areas too) when 99% of the other frequencies in in the same band are available is strange, especially when often they will be users in competition with each other like taxis, I can get 3 different taxis firms on one frequency and they are all their own licensed frequencies not community repeaters and occasionally they do suffer problems as CTCSS isn't perfect.

They also seem to allocate a lot of frequencies to councils and other organisations from 446.000 to 446.200, now I know the business steps are 12.5k compared to 446 which is 6.25 but they are still in the same band as PMR446 and subject to interference as the 12.5khz bandwidth bleeds over the 6.25 446 channels and vice-versa.

Take also for example the olympics, why did they decide to allocate and restrict parts of the ham bands to olympic staff, especially when the old police smartzone trunking system is long gone, they could have used 152-156Mhz and/or 450-453Mhz or a wide range of other bands that don't have any usage.

Ofcom do have representatives on the ITU meetings and committees as do all other member countries of the International Telecommunications Union - As these allocations have to be agreed by all countries. I agree Silver Shadow Offcom are very ineffective it seems, but RSGB LTD will be taking over most of the licencing for hams in the near future, so wait a couple of years until we start getting charged for licences and NOV's again, after all RSGB is a Limited Profit making Company and not a society as they claim. Perhaps Offcom is not all that bad compared to the alternative when you consider the options? lol

The 433MHz inputs for 70cm repeaters in the UK are now all moving to 431MHz inputs to avoid the interference from these devices which the rest of Europe have already done.
