Keyless Car Entry Blocked By Pirate Radio Station Broadcasted From Hollywood Bank Roof

By Susannah Bryan - 12/28/2012

HOLLYWOOD - It was a mystery no one had the answer to - until now.

For months, dozens of people could not use their keyless entry system to unlock or start their cars whenever they parked near the Hollywood Police Department. Once the car was towed to the dealer, the problem miraculously disappeared.

Police have since cracked the case.

Turns out the problem wasn't with the car, the battery or even user error, but an illegal pirate radio station that was jamming the signal from keyless entry systems of several makes of cars, including Lexus and Toyota.

Detectives are still searching for the man who set up the bootleg station on the roof of the eight-story Regents bank building at 450 Park Road -- a block north of police headquarters. The station was broadcasting Caribbean music around the clock through 104.7 FM, police say.

If found, the man could be arrested on felony charges and face a fine of at least $10,000 from the Federal Communications Commission.

An undercover detective and FCC agent found the equipment on Dec. 6 concealed under an air conditioning chiller.

Four days after they removed the equipment, a man identifying himself as "Jay" left a message for a maintenance worker at the bank building, police say. When the worker returned the call, "Jay" asked if he'd taken his equipment. The answer: No, but the cops did.

Most people have heard of pirate radio stations blocking legal radio stations. But keyless entry? That's a new one.

Hardly a new problem...Here in the UK the idiots have put car immobilisers on 433.920, right in the middle of the 70cm digital centre of activity..
At one point cars driving on the coast road near Cromer North Norfolk were having thier cars stop, due to the Radar base beside the road & many car parks have a problem, for example I know of one in Thetford Norfolk & one in Lincoln where parked cars can be impossible to re start unless they are moved.

Nothing to do with Ofcom. It was the brain dead morons who make cars & believe they can just use what ever frequency they want.

I still blame ofcom as they are the daft buggers who made this license free band available right in the middle of the 70cm ham band

This item has just been posted on FB by a well known free radio individual..And I decided to do some maths..Here is my reply..

I have seen this story before & I am not sure that it is a very accurate story..Key fobs work in the 433 mhz amateur radio digital centre of operation, so amateurs are the logical first guess, especially as digital use often takes longer than a voice transmission & given their permitted power levels. But a a lot of other low power users also use 433 MHz & some of these users, are more likely to use long term transmissions for things like PC routing etc etc.. But my main concern is that 433.920 mhz requires a 4th harmonic to jam a car key fob & this makes it VERY unlikely given the maths, as only one frequency with a 4th harmonic of 433.920 fits & thats 108.48MHz & that is at the bottom end of the airband & not one that any half intelligent free radio broadcaster would use. The aircraft band users would have complained long before they worked out the key fob problem.... Also 108.48 gives a second harmonic that would (or should / could have) badly effected North American TV channel 16. which is 210 to 216 MHz, as the 2nd harmonic frequency of 108.48MHz is 216.96MHz. So this story looks like a non starter to me.

Go onto 443.920 & you will hear small sound bursts, they last a couple of seconds & sound like what they are. I live on a estate & it's one every few seconds.
