I live on the North Norfolk Coast Near Cromer and have had a amateur licence for 19 years now (in case anyone wonders why i tx on certain frequencies) - There is a band in the allocated amateur radio frequencies which i use regularly. So whats the big deal I hear you shout? Well every time I am passing a Landrover Freelander and transmitting at that time on that band, it sets off the car alarms on freelanders. At first i thought it coincidence that these alarms were going off, until I tested it out ( in the spirit of experimentation as my licence dictates) and it was in fact my mobile station which was causing the alarms to activate. Luckily no one bats an eyelid when a car alarm goes off (sign of the times :| so no harm done then, p.s. it does not effect any other of the landrover models as far as i can see. As for key fobs for cars, The band is in fact allocated by Offcom and nothing to do with car manufacturers.

If you dont mind me asking what frequency is it that sets the landrover alarms off? One of my neighbours has a vhf controlled garage door that works from DTMF codes I've never tried it of course but I wonder if it would be as easy as keying up on that frequency and punching in the dtmf codes to open the garage door?

Its in the 2m simplex amateur frequencies - I am sure with that info you can find it as amateurs tend to stick to a few regular channels near the calling frequency. I do not want to name the frequency on the internet, as I may leave myself open to being sued by Landrover, who can employ a lot more expensive and better lawyers than me. I am but a poor pensioner :(

Some secure locations have gates that are radio opened, using just a CTCSS or DCS code..I know because I my Uniden grabbed the frequency & code to open a gate that allows the fuel tanker access onto a airport runway!!!!!

Mine is the 3500 & I love it. Close Call is amazing & has changed the hobby massively. Sometimes I take the Uniden out for a drive & just see what I can pick up as I am doing what I normally do. Some traffic lights transmit, some security systems, especially those inside shops transmit (And not those things by the doors either.) The 230 as I understand it, is a very good scanner too.

I have a couple of snanners . But got rid of my main aor2000 last year as it was getting a bit long in the tooth, as I had it from new. Great scanner but a bit on the big side for today's market. Looking forward to the uniden for a new toy to play with lol :D

Thanks and in a similar position I understand and it was the band in use of interest to me as I was wondering if it was around the same place as the other 70cm frequencies which you've let me know isn't the case as its VHF

The garage door i pick up isnt 2m but it is vhf in the 173mhz band

Looking at my records Norwich Airport fuel tanker gate was on 462.000MHz in 2008. This was within weeks of two separate incidents where unauthorised vehicles drove inside the perimeter fence, after security failings there.
Googling around, it looks like the Landrover Freelander security has a known problem. Many Landyy sites are full of people referring to it or writing about returning from holiday to find a flat battery as the alarm has been constantly triggering to all sorts of RF sources. There is apparently a known fix for the issue.
Personally I know of one Freelander that triggers every time I transmit on 70cm or PMR General 440.400MHz within about 50 yards of it.

Although the frequency that i found is in the VHF band - it is probably a harmonic that is setting it off as opposed to the vhf frequency lol - Didnt know that about the PMR general frequency - interesting that landrover are not too bothered about it. But i blame offcom for putting all these low power devices in the Ham 70cms band (although we are secondary users on 70cm). The Govt will try and squeeze every last penny out of the spectrum, dont think they really could care less about detrimental service for users. Dont give them any ideas though as we already have a "Pasty" Tax, dont want them to start taxing our transmissions on Amateur Radio lol
