Yet another Hoax.

I am going to post any & all malicious hoax mayday stories here. Maybe if we can build a list of how these are happening regularly, it will prompt Ofcom to take them seriously.

http://www.carricktoday.co.uk/news/local-headlines/hoax-mayday-call-led-to-three-hour-search-1-4227759

At 9:30pm on Tuesday 6th September Girvan Lifeboat volunteer crew’s pagers were activated by Belfast Coastguard, on arrival at station the crew were still receiving updates from Belfast coastguard as to a mayday call sent out via VHF radio. Within minutes the crew were kitted up, running along the jetty with the relief all-weather lifeboat 12-27 Pride and Spirit soon leaving her berth. A full search commenced of the harbour area and towards the pier end and back again, further updates were received from Belfast Coastguard and the lifeboat carried out a search parallel with the shoreline north past Maidens towards Culzean. The lifeboat scanned the coastline and area utilising the on-board search lights and illuminating rocket flares, once that stage of the search had been completed the lifeboat then commenced a search further offshore heading back towards Girvan. A triangulation of the single mayday placed the distress call further up the coastline, Girvan coastguard rescue team conducted shoreline searches around Girvan, whilst further north Ardrossan CRT conducted shoreline searches to compliment Troon Lifeboat ongoing search. After nearly three hours at sea with our search completed with nothing untoward found and HM coastguard continuing their investigations as to the calls origin, Girvan Lifeboat stood down and returned to station where it was washed, refuelled and made ready for service at 00:30 On completion of the search, all resources were stood down and returned to station with Belfast Coastguard Operations Centre treating the this as a hoax radio call with malicious intent, HM Coastguard want to remind the public that malicious 999 and radio calls to the emergency services is illegal and could lead to prosecution. It also risks the lives of the emergency services involved and puts the public at risk as well as rescue resources are actively engaged if a genuine emergency situation arises.

http://jerseyeveningpost.com/news/2016/09/01/hoaxes-risk-lives-warns-coastguard-after-fake-999-call/

A HOAX 999 call sparked a mass emergency response on the Island’s north coast on Tuesday after a girl claimed her friend had been swept out to sea.

The St Catherine’s Lifeboat, Fire and Rescue Service, Coastguard and civilians on private vessels leapt into action near Bouley Bay after the call sparked a mayday broadcast.

After a lengthy search and rescue operation, the emergency services were stood down when the call was found to be fake.

Writing on social media the Coastguard said fake calls put the lives of the public and emergency services at risk.

The hoax came just days after Islander Joy Godfray (31) was killed when she was washed off a slip near Green Island. Fire and Rescue service staff in their inshore rescue boat battled treacherous conditions to try to save her but she was later pronounced dead in hospital.

THE Ardrossan Coastguard have warned locals after they received a malicious Mayday call last night (Tuesday).

The team was called out shortly after 10pm following a Mayday call being received on VHF Channel 16.

The team responded with colleagues from the Troon lifeboat also being tasked to the incident. With limited information received via the initial Mayday call, a search area was established between Barrassie and Ardrossan.

Troon lifeboat conducted a search between Troon and Ardrossan with the team using their 4x4 capability to conduct a search of the beach between Irvine and Barrassie. Team members also deployed on foot for a detailed search of Irvine Harbour using spotlights and making numerious radio calls on VHF Channel 16 with no reply.

The team thereafter conducted a coastal search further north from Irvine to Ardrossan with nothing of note being found. The search was conducted in challenging weather conditions with poor visibility at times due to drizzle and fog.
On completion of the search, all resources were stood down and returned to station with Belfast Coastguard Operations Centre treating the this as a hoax radio call with malicious intent.

A spokesperson for the Coastguard said: "The Ardrossan Coastguard Rescue Team want to remind the public that malicious 999 and radio calls to the emergency services is illegal and could lead to prosecution.

"It also risks the lives of the emergency services involved and puts the public at risk as well as rescue resources are actively engaged if a genuine emergency situation arises."

They should release the audio, someone may recognise the voice…

Ofcom raided a free radio station in Heartforshire a couple of days ago because it "COULD" cause interference. Yet when it comes to radios being sold & used that "Could" be used to cause all sorts of malicious issues, they sweet FA.

The government get money (VAT) from sold radios. They don't get money from no licence fee.

It "Could" potentially at have interfered with all, however thats a old & slightly dishonest statement that they have been using for years, that is not as defensible as it once was. Any signal in theory "COULD" interfere with another, so there is no good defence against it & the fact that Airwave is used by Fire, Police, Ambulance etc & is way out of the way of the band 2 broadcasters is of course not mentioned.
Also when did it become legal to prosecute someone for what they may do in the future? Look at motoring offences. The law we are told cannot look at what could have happened, or even what did happen as a result of a offence. The direct offence is all the courts can consider. So why do Ofcom & before them the GPO & DTI use such poor logic & dishonesty in court? It has certainly cost them in the past, when challenged.
The term "Could cause interference," it would seem is used as it frightens magistrates & make them think that there is a real probability that it was going to happen.
When a friend was in court many years ago the DTI & their alledged expert, who said some bloody strange things for an alledged expert. Got very defensive when a magistrate questioned them. They were not use to magistrates challenging poor technical statements. But sadly for them, they had come up against a magistrate with a electronics business. In summing up the magistrates said the DTI had been evasive & untrustworthy witnesses & fined my friend, whose first offence had been in Hertfordshire in the very early 60's £33 each for the three separate offences he had been proven to commit.
However, having said the above there is a good chance that one of the cheap Chinese transmitters could have been used & those are terribly made & have all sorts of issues designed into them, including massive harmonics. So ignoring the "It Could" statement, the reality is, a lot of VHF broadcast TX's are in the country that should never be used as they are problems waiting to happen. Next add onto the TX issue, the fact that a fair amount of the FM stations in that area of the country are heavily involved in drug distribution & the raid could start to make sense, even if they are not being honest in the interference statement.
