I think he means the bandwidth in step size. I found a post about a smilar thing with conflicting opinions...

I would expect the noise floor to change when varying the
filter bandwidth. The thermal noise floor should be equal to:

P = kTB

where B is equal to bandwidth (k is Boltzmann's constant
and T is temperature) . For room temperature, the
thermal noise floor in dBm can be simplified to:

P(dBm) = -174 + 10log (B)

So for a 6 MHz bandwidth, the noise floor is at -106 dBm, but
at 10 kHz, it's at -134 dBm. Since we're interested in signal to
noise ratio, the filter bandwidth makes a big difference.

Your actual noise floor will be degraded by the noise figure of the
dongle and any man made noise at your location.

BTW, the pics you posted to the group photo folder are too small
to be able to see much.

With the following reply...

Yes the bandwidth is continuously adjustable and is displayed on the left side, but the screen displays up to two megaHertz at a time and signal levels don't change when narrowing the bandwidth or narrowing the spectrum displayed. The only thing that will change the signal level is opening configuration and changing the RF Gain. You can change the bandspread to display only about 100 hz and the level of a signal remains the same as when it displayed 2 mHz. You can narrow the filter to 600 Hz or widen it to 250000 and no difference.

I thought I was ordering a neat toy but it has turned out to be no toy, but a capable SDR and spectrum monitor 24-1700mHz. I was just reading someone's post about SDRs written in 2010 and the guy was saying that it would cost in the thousands to buy an SDR that really worked at VHF and UHF frequencies. How time flies! I listened to the NA QSO Party last weekend on 10 meters and after getting used to the waterfall and figuring out how to use it to tune SSB signals, it was very competitive with my IC-706mkIIg.

I see that they have similar dongles for ATSC TV that run about $30-40, but no SDR capability yet there.

Hi there.
Its the display bandwidth in the config settings. What I found was when it was set over 2048 the decoding did not work. Possibly my Laptop could not handle the processing. When I set it to 2048 It works everytime ?. I am not sure how big a spectrum view is available on the rtl dongle?.

I've downloaded DSD and cygwin1. I have a SDR dongle using SDR sharp and I have DSD running and when the system transmits I see the 'VOICE' message but how do I hear it or get the audio?

I have the latest version of sdr shard version 1.0.0.1172 when i load it i cant get a spectrum sread between 440 - 460mhz which is what i want to listen to. I get a box what says shift ive put 440,000,000 but there is no centre frequency box to get the spectrum spread ive not got the dongle yet but ive downloaded the sdr software to hav a look at it. Wi i get the spectrum option when i get the dongle.

On the screen now where ive typed in 440,000,000 all i can see eitherside of it is 439.9875 and 440.0125 is this what i should be seeing.

It should say the frequency at the top or the left depending on your version?

If your on 12.5 steps and it's 439.9875 on one side and 440.0125 on the other then yes 440.000 MHz is the centre frequency you are on. You'll need to connect your dongle for a proper display as it doesn't do much without it.

Ive got a dongle on order it shud be here fingers crossed by the 20th Dec ive also ordered a MCX to reverse SMA and a PL259 to PL259 adapter to join my 2 RG213 cables together as my computer and the radio antenna cable are miles away from each other.

My partner getting excited too as she wants to hear some digital transmissions lol.
