TYT MD380 as a DMR scanner

Postby AndrewIrvine » Sat May 07, 2016 11:03 am

I'm not sure how good this is, or know of anyone who has tried it.

It's also in this month's Radio User http://www.pwpublishing.ltd.uk/radio-us ... est-issue/

It doesn't convert the radio into a scanner as such, just permits all talkgroups to be monitored without having to put them in the radio as contacts. Frequency, timeslot & colour code are still required. Works well though. Handy to keep a listening watch on my local Amateur repeaters.

I am not sure I like this.
If the radio used is limited to the amateur bands or 446, that is one thing, but it does look like this set up opens the door easier for the morons who want to cause issues to legitimate users.
I know fools can do the same as everyone else & scan using DSD to find the info needed to cause issues. But at least the most stupid of the fools are kept out & the others have to do some work to cause issues. But with this system it looks like the hard work is done for you & that has to be bad news for the hobby when even the most stupid of the fools can do it all that easily.

I'd prefer something that logs it's hits. I'll pass just now and stick with my SDR dongle, or the Pro 2042 with the discriminator tap attached. I'm assuming it won't be long before someone comes up with the handheld version of the likes of the AOR DV1.
