@greg Please don't recommend these radios simply because the price.

They are no good for DMR repeaters and most people on here will be wanting to use it that way and they'll end up causing problems on their local repeater.

It wouldn't harm "Baofeng/Pofung what ever they call themselves now" to make a new design. Why are these radios still called baofeng anyway I thought they changed their name a few years ago to pofung?

In fairness to Greg, and I could be wrong, but from what I've read from previous posts is that he has no interest in Transmitting on DMR, he just wants a make-shift scanner capeable of picking up digital signals so to only listen to local security, shopwatch etc.

That said, however, I'm not sure that Greg understands all the parameters that's required to actually listen, TG, Slot, CC etc. I don't believe the DM5R is capeable of automatically finding this information so without, it gets even more complicated.

The bottom line is DMR isn't impossible to listen to, it's just complicated.

The DM5R will not do what you want it to do though Greg.

See the DM5R only has one time slot. Some radios use two. What this means is, for example, and if I'm wrong someone please say because I'm a noob too, that during a transmission received on the DM5R it's likely you'll miss half the conversation because the tramsmitting Radio will be bouncing around on both Slots.

I have come across this myself recently using a MD380. Example:

Freq: 440.000
Colour Code: 5
Talk Group: 99
Slot 1 & 2.

Basically, on the DM5R, if you put the above in, you would only be able to hear any transmission that comes over on Time Slot one. It's likely that after the initial transmission, so, "Delta 3 calling Oscar 1 over", maybe on slot one, then the reply, "Oscar 1 go ahead over", will be on Slot 2 so you'll miss anything that uses both slots.

Best thing to do is wait for the DM5R to be released with BOTH timeslots, which it will be in a few months, or get a DMR capaeable scanner.

One important lesson I've learnt though is that DMR isn't Plug and Play, nor "out of the box", it's a complicated hobby.

I hope the above helps a little with what we mean by timeslots etc. The radio in question could cause havoc if you transmitted on some frequencies, granted, but from what I've read, you only want to listen so your radio won't be programmed with a TX frequency anyway so...

The two slots I understand are for digital trunking systems.

In a way - going digital does seem to have the extra benefit of making even unencrypted channels far more difficult for the casual listener.

That was a good read, the DMR scanners are fairly expensive, Will scanning for the future require such capable equipment?
