I'm no expert, but I think the problem is both hardware and software: given the settings you need to apply to get best decoding, I suspect the Uniden electronics are neither sensitive enough to detect/decode the signal reliably, and the front end filters are a little too narrow for simplex DMR. Recent firmware upgrades on the 536/436 made the scanner more sensitive on UHF band (to the slight detriment to VHF sensitivity). The settings that work best are low digital decode threshold (a sign of poor sensitivity?) and FM vs NFM (a sign of being too selective?). I'm guessing it won't be fixed soon, if it all. Note there have been a few firmware upgrades for the US-models: none (as yet) for the 3600.

Neil57uk wrote:The bih question is is the Whistler any better with simplex DMR does anybody know?

The TRX-1 is significantly better at DMR simplex decoding. If a transceiver detects a signal/decodes voice 100% & 100% of the time respectively, I'd say the Uniden equivalent is 80% & 20% at best, and the Whistler is 95% & 95%. This is one of a few areas where is Whistler is much better than a Uniden.

AFAIK, and backed up by comms I've had with UpMan, the fundamental technology that Uniden have patented and use in all their Close Call scanners, will never work on DMR simplex.

For the benefit of others, if you can DETECT an analogue or digital signal using Close Call on any Uniden today, you'll be able to do the same on these new Uniden digital DMR scanners. Likewise if you can't Close Call a signal today, you won't be able to on this new range either: the thing you can now do is DECODE the DMR signal to hear the voice.

Interesting stuff guys. Very helpful thanks.

Have experimented with the settings in Sch/CC Options but havnt found much difference but has anybody established best AGC setting, digital waiting time, digi threshold mode and threshold level etc?

Also been tying to find an official comment from Uniden but without success.

I've found the "threshold levels" on the UBC3600XLT to be a law unto themselves, and working out what is "best" is impossible.
If you think about it, it is a farce anyway. I'm sure users of commercial DMR transceiver don't have to mess around with "threshold levels" in order to communicate, so it rather implies than Uniden haven't done a good job of just making it work.
Apart from my local shopping centre (which provides a STRONG signal) all digital comms I detect are dodgy and intermittent at best.

Long live analog!
I reserve the right to ignore people who have made no attempt to the read the manual, and expect others to do it for them.

Should have gone to Specsavers - sorry I mean Whistler :smiles:

For best results, I'd recommend the following settings:
Modulation FM
100ms wait time
Manual Threshold set at 5 (or below - with ARC536PRO you can trick the threshold to be set at less than 5: Manual 1 or 2 seems to work best for me)

Yes very helpful. Interesting that you suggest FM and not NFM?

FM does seem to work much better. As above, I suspect the NFM front end filter used on this new range of Uniden is too narrow for DMR simplex: it is narrower than the Whistler.

With the 3500 I found that NFM was best so will experiment with FM for simplex DMR.
