UNIDEN UBCD3600XLT CLOSE CALL...

Postby USAFE501 » Sun Jul 30, 2017 1:11 am

Hi Guys,
Anyone with one of these comment on the close call function ? I have a 3500 and always liked how quick it locked onto a signal , is the new digital version just as quick bearing in mind it has more to deal with such as slots....and can I assume that if a DMR signal is captured with close call, the radio displays colour code , slot etc ?

I already have a Whistler TRX-1 but might go for a Uniden... :?: :?:

Thanks in advance,

I think but I'm not sure that Close Call can not detect DMR frequencies on the 3600. But I can be wrong....

I have the BCD436HP.....essentially the same as the 3600. My experience is that Close Call works slightly better than the 3500, as it appears to be a bit more sensitive.
Close Call as a technology will not hit on DMR simplex/repeater uplink channels, as the 30msec duty cycle on single slot signals is too short to be detected. It works fine on DMR repeater signals. All Unidens are the same, including your 3500, although only these new models can DECODE the DMR signal. As far as I remember it will display the decoded DCC/Slot/Gp/RID etc (if not, it's very simple to program it in as a Quicksave channel which does show this info: much easier than a TRX1).

'UPMan' (Paul Opitz — a Uniden Representative in the USA) recently posted this on the radioreference.com forum:

As to Close Call: It will never work on simplex. The 30 mS duty cycle prevents the scanner from seeing the simplex DMR as a coherent signal.

As to just receiving/decoding simplex: I get 80-90% decode on simplex with the above settings (FM, MAN 8). Due to the 30 mS duty cycle, 100% isn't possible.
I reserve the right to ignore people who have made no attempt to the read the manual, and expect others to do it for them.

I wish....I haven't heard of/seen anyone outside the employment of Uniden claiming anywhere near that level of performance on simplex. The TRX1 is miles better on DMR simplex, and it does NXDN. In saying that, personally I find the performance and operation of the Uniden to be better in most other things. In simple terms, the Uniden is good for finding signals and the TRX is good at scanning/recording them.

The other thing to note from that thread has been the lack of updates (at least to date) for any of these non-US line of scanners, including the 3600.

UPMan talks bollox at times, it is more like 10 - 15% with any setting

Recently and not for the first time I was so close to somebody using a simplex DMR that I could hear what they were saying (without a radio that is) yet my 436 (USA version of 3600) could not decode the DMR. The duplex shopping centre a mile away was being decoded without difficulty. Could quote several similar examples.

Its not a single strength thing. It appears to be somthing to do with the nature of simplex signals but dont understand it.

Have tried various settings without success.

I would say the set vertually never decodes simplex DMR. Undrstand from USA forums that the "upgrade" makes little difference.

Does anybody have a better experience?

The difference between DMR Simplex DMR and DMR repeater output is that a mobile or portable when transmitting is only transmitting on one time slot, giving the ON/OFF/ON/OFF RF signal, this is the same in simplex or transmitting to a repeater... The repeater transmits on both time slots at the same time (regardless of traffic on both slots or not) so sending a continious signal..
The Unidens have a problem with the ON/OFF/ON/OFF nature of simplex/mobile/portable DMR signals..
An even bigger problem is Simplex DMR and Uniden digital Close Call, just does not work, this is well documented by Uniden..

Thank you for that explanation Mike. I understand now.

The Uniden is pretty deaf when it comes to simplex DMR which is very disapointing. I assume that this is a flaw with the writting of the software? Is it likely to be corrected in any upgrades?

The bih question is is the Whistler any better with simplex DMR does anybody know?

As far as I know Uniden have no plans to alter their Close Call to work with Simplex DMR..
The Whistler range work fine with Simplex DMR..
