FT 450D or Kenwood TS 570D

Postby timcooper55 » Tue Mar 22, 2016 10:08 am

Hi,

Someone at our radio club is selling a TS 570D for £425.00. He says its in mint condition and not used very much.
Having recently passed my foundation licence, this would be my first hf radio.

The thing is, do I go for the Kenwood, or go for the ft 450d, which you can get new for £500.00.
Which would be the better "first" hf radio.
My only other radio is the Ft 8900.

Many thanks

Tim

I am a Yaesu fan. My oldest is a steam (valve) driven FTDX-400 from the late 60's that pushes out around 200 watts. I also have an FT-857 & an FT-817, among others. But of the two you are looking at I would go for the Kenwood, simply because as good as both are, the Kenwood has very slightly better filtering & looks & feels like a more up market radio.
I do not think you would be unhappy with either, but for me, the Kenwood has a small edge over the Yaesu.
eham, is a good site to see what other amateurs think of your potential purchases at..

Hi mOLsx,

Thanks for reply and links.still undecided, Eham gives them both equal marks.
Seems the Kenwood is a better radio, but for £75.00 more I can get a new one with guarantee, and I have a YAESU FT 8900 so would be keeping it in the family.

Thanks again,

Tim

As I said, I love Yaesu's.
Most Yaesu's use a similar menu programming system, so if you can use one, you can use them all with a few minutes practice.
My personal opinion is that you will get a good radio which ever one you buy.

Mint condition, not been used very much - sounds nice, the new model being over a grand. I suppose that based on the prices they're going for second hand, it's not bad. Does it do what you want?

I always look in more unusual places - I have an Icom HF that was an emergency radio on a boat - as in left in it's box, just in case. 3 years old, and the Marine version of a popular Ham radio. The only difference being it receives and transmits anywhere, and the tuning knob has a ball bearing in it that keeps the dial from turning, but does stop you giving it a good spin, as the friction means it stops as soon as you take your finger off. Advertised in the marine section on ebay - all the hams missed it and I got it for a song with a high sounding, but realistically low bid. Nobody else noticed it, and I was very pleased - and so was the seller, who just wanted shot of it, unaware of it's non-marine value. The model is a few digits different from the amateur version, so probably not in anyone's saved searches. Worth a check?
