Ofcom privacy breech in 2017 callbook.

Postby m0lsx » Wed Dec 14, 2016 11:32 am

The UK communications regulator Ofcom has admitted it released radio amateurs' private home address instead of their mailing address

This information was published in the RSGB Yearbook 2017 and the 2017 Callseeker Plus CD and Flash Drive.

Ofcom has asked the RSGB to destroy all the unsold copies of the RSGB Yearbook 2017 and replace those that have already been issued with a corrected edition.

Due to my wifes work we withhold details, so this could be a issue.

I suspect the home address of licensed hams working at the ISIS target, RAF Menwith Hill is something slightly more worrying.

Alan - using your callsign brought back your full address and your wife's name in about 30 secs - so I'd not worry too much. Worth noting Ofcom had your wife's 2E0 callsign and your 2E0 one in the 2015 list!

I remember years ago the Call Book having multiple pages of "details witheld at the licencee's request. station located in the Harrogate area" :smiles:

I assume you are referring to the likes of Chief Technician Douglas Britten G3KFL an RAF Signals Intelligence Specialist serving at 399 Signals Unit. Who was apparently approached by a Russian at the Science Museum who addressed him as Golf Three Kilo Foxtrot Lima.
"It was later assumed that the Soviets had made a study of radio hams who were servicemen."

Indeed - mind you didn;t everyone send their QSL cards with their full names and addresses on them to PO Box 88 Moscow for years and years to eventually find out it was KGB Headquarters!
