external antenna and hand held

Postby Paul63 » Tue Jan 10, 2017 9:59 pm

Hi all
was looking at getting a whistler 1010 or a grecom psr 200 base scanner then thought I might get a uniden 125 to use as handheld and mobile so my question is ,is it ok to use a rooftop antenna with the 125 or not as im getting itchy feet on what to buy my budget is around £130
many thanks
Paul

Yes, a handheld antenna works fine on a external antenna. Handheld radios can overload easily, but thats not an issue most of the time.
I use a micro mag on my handies. It is small, cheap & does the job.
£130 should buy a 125 & possibly the micro mag too.
Don't forget you will need a base & a antenna for a mobile set up, so micro mags at £20 make a good option, as that is half what a separate base & half reasonable antenna will cost.

I would personally avoid the non discone scanner (RX only) antennas.
I have a discone, but generally use a three band colinear myself.
The problem is a lot of junk is sold as RX antennas & unless you have a analyser, you only have their word that it even works in the areas all edged.
Any small mico mag works, they are all pretty much the same antennas, just sold at different prices.
Any amateur dual band will work on RX. Base, handheld or mobile.
Good discones are few & far between now & some of the most expensive (Icom for example) are simply rebadged antennas with a 50% or more mark up.
