AM seems to be better than FM

Postby andy1t72 » Sun Jan 01, 2017 5:03 pm

well got my 125xlt for xmas and really getting to grips with it now as its my first ever scanner ,
live close to heathrow so im getting all the heathrow and gatwick stuff coming through now all on AM
now ive found several taxi frequencies after buying kimmys cd but they are all on FM so ive punched those frequencies in
and all im getting when they lock onto a transmition is white noise , as im picking up AM nicely now sat in my house , is FM different
or should it come through just like AM

The background noise (static) will be more harsh in FM, than AM.

Air band is AM.
Other bands are FM.

Eh? Am is worse for interference than FM, which is largely immune from impulse based noise. Power supplies can under some circumstances inject hum, and the switch mode ones can have nasty harmonic output, but the impact on AM vs FM at a particular frequency means AM suffered badly. Usually though, the switch mode interference is carried on the cables. 2.4GHz wifi and Sky haven't ever caused me any grief - intrigued now?

If the taxis are using digital radio, it may sound like "white noise" to the uninitiated.
I reserve the right to ignore people who have made no attempt to the read the manual, and expect others to do it for them.

FM is always harsher to listen to. I do on occasions turn a radio from FM to AM if I am listening to a single frequency & want to leave the squelch open. I still hear everything, but don't get that horrible FM noise.

I get a lot of static/white noise on both UHF and VHF on my scanners. kill the sky box, the wifi and all the plug ring main in the house and that sorts it for me, only issue is our lass likes the tv too much!

That's grim - mains born I'm guessing. Some ferrite rings might be worth fiddling with?
