Hi Guys,

Can you pick up Her Majestys CoastGuard or is it all encrypted like the other emergency services?

Thanks

Coastguard has a public service element to their work, so all FM, but the only crafty thing being that channel 0 - 156.0MHz is not included in the marine radios the public buy - so gives them an interference free channel that can only be listened in to be enthusiasts - plus they often have other licensed private channels in the marine allocation where it's needed. The only thing to remember is that marine channels can be simplex or duplex, so often you need to enter both frequencies to hear some of the ship to shore stuff - as in on one you hear the ship, and the other the coastguard (or other shore station)

They use 160.6 FM sometimes too. That would be channel 0B (156.0 being '0A'), but I've also seen it described as Channel' 99'.
Personally I've not heard it referred to as either, but then I'm a long way from the coast so opportunities are limited…
I reserve the right to ignore people who have made no attempt to the read the manual, and expect others to do it for them.

Yes, you can pick up HMCG perfectly along the coast. During a recent Mayday in the Bristol Channel, I could hear the Milford Haven Coast Guard perfectly. I couldn't hear the actual units very well but the dispatch was loud and clear. Only problem I encountered was hearing Channel 0 which isn't programmed into the Service Bank.
