KML data for Coastguard sites

Postby Minus1 » Thu Oct 05, 2017 5:12 pm

This chap managed (eventually) to drag out of the MCA some data about Coastguard transmitter sites:
https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/ ... _marine_vh
To this I have added the new MSI VHF channel numbers for the sites that are listed are:
http://weather.mailasail.com/Franks-Wea ... -Schedules
and produced some CSV data, that you can convert to Google Earth KML format using this site:
https://www.earthpoint.us/ExcelToKml.as ... EarthIcons

Save the data below, including the header line, as a CSV file.
Open it using the earthpoint link (it saves a KML file to your computer)
Open the KML file in Google Earth.

Obviously I haven't verified most of this, but it ties in well with what I have previously found.
(NB The co-ords of the "Forth Bridge" site are wrong - it is way off, but I can't tell what it should be. Brighton Marina was wrong too, but that was just an E/W error.)

You can easily change the label colour if you want, but I like sea stuff blue :-)
'194' is the blue star map pin.

Re: KML data for Coastguard sites

Great stuff - never done that before but got the info into Google Earth. The WTR info is a bit off for our part of the country, so I've fixed them to be as accurate as I can - they're close enough for general finding the town, but if anyone is compiling their own area, this might help.

Thanks for all those links and data crunching.

Caister on sea is 52°38'45.97"N 1°44'9.52"E
Lowestoft is 52°28'36.09"N 1°45'39.18"E
Bawdsey was in the sea and is really 51°59'37.07"N 1°24'29.79"E

Thanks for those corrections.
Are you sure about Caister though?
There is a flipping great mast near the point stated, whereas your point seems to be just a big shed on the beach.

Mablethorpe is also in the sea, and should be 0. …E not 1. …E, it must use :63 as it is directly between two sites using :62 and :64

Re: Caister - to be honest, the shed on the beach is the lifeboat station, but it's NOT an RNLI station, it's privately run because the RNLI chucked them out a few years ago, so they operate independently, and there's a coach watch station there too. The big Caister mast could well be the site, so ignore my correction, and I'll check it when I'm that way. The old MRCC at Yarmouth's antennas are still in situ, and don't appear on the list, but again, that site could still be the active one - seems pointless moving a multi-channel installation to Caister?

A bit of a mystery. I suppose it's a couple of hours sitting at each one to check ch 16 and the safety broadcast channel and see which is which. I'll report back when I get something concrete then.
