Antenna question

Postby LandingGearLaurie » Fri Jan 19, 2018 3:00 pm

Hi Guys,
Can anyone advise?
My radio shack backs onto a railway line/platform building (basically I have a 20 ft wall to play with)
I am going to attach my antenna on a pole via a bracket on the wall somewhere near the top but well out of the way.
My question is, will I get interference on my scanner from the track? I am going to raise the antenna high.

Thoughts?

If its a line with overhead electric cables then probably yes .Why not try hooking up temporarily at low level to try .Also bear in mind what will happen if the pole supporting it blows over in strong wind.If falls onto the rail track or overhead lines the consequences could be dire .Also if there is a platform behind the wall and it hits someone you could face serious trouble

The over head cables will, like other high voltage over head lines, potentially produce REIN ( Repetitive Electrical Impulse Noise.) This is normally caused by worn & dirty insulators & given the state of maintenance on the railways it is probably getting more common & it can be strong enough to knock wi-fi out.
And if diesels run on the line, then yes to QRM from those too. I can remember one Railways on the air weekend loosing all use of the radio when a diesel engine was within 50 yards of me.

Guys,

Ok, the Railway is not overhead cables and I am behind a Railway building. Even if the antenna fell there is no chance of hitting the track as the building roof inclines. I do have a CB Station in my Shack and get a little QRM but then I do have. 24ft Gainmaster antenna.
Just wondering wether I’ll get the same with a 1m airband specific vertical?
Will let you know my results but please come back with ideas.
