Antenna for car

Postby Southwales » Wed Jan 24, 2018 11:37 am

Hi, just wondering from those of you that use your scanner in the car, what antenna are you using? I like to use my uniden 125 and baofeng as a scanner when mobile, I have a Nagoya mini mag (35cm tall) as pictured below, it is an improvement over the stock antenn but still think I could be using something better, the one advantage with the mini mag is the very thin coax cable for closing the door, but I imagine even at 3 metres it suffers signal loss, how do you manage with thicker coax and door seals? I like to listen to CB and pmr including 446 etc, although the 446 radios are only 500mw it is surprising how far away I can now receive them using an external antenna. If any I would prefer an antenna for pmr as that is a lot more active then cb radio.

Although don't want to go to this extreme.

Personally I mainly use a mini mag now. I do have various other amateur radio HF & VHF antennas, but other than the mini mag they are all large single band antennas & thus they need a decent sized mount. Whilst the mini mag is discreet, cheap to replace & I have lost several antenna mounts down the years & it is quick & very easy to put in place when I want it.

I do like the mini mag or convenience but would like something that was a step up, looks like it was built to last, and with better coax than rg174 but not as thick as rg58 something like my moonraker mini mag maybe. Would my moonraker cb antenna perform worse than my mini naygoa?

The chances are no you CB mag will perform no better. It is deigned for 27 MHZ. And the coax is no better. RG-58 is VERY poor quality & not at all suitable at frequencies much above 50 MHZ & certainly useless at UHF.
If you want good quality Coax then you need to spend on separate mount, separate coax & connectors & a separate antenna, as all of the factory VHF/UHF antennas that I can think of, come with cheap quality coax & that includes all of the mag mounts I can think of.
