Uniden bearcat 125xlt beginner

Postby Jl1108 » Mon Feb 12, 2018 4:46 pm

Hi all, I recently purchased my first radio scanner and I’m slowly getting to terms with it. It was primarily bought to use when at air shows throughout the UK, however I am now interested in seeing what I can pick up from home. I have read very good reports about the Watson 881 antenna for longer range and am looking to purchase one. Before I go ahead, I have a question, which may be really silly so please forgive me. Will I still be able to use the W-881 antenna at air shows or is it just for long range. Thanks in advance. :smiles:

Hello & welcome to the forum & the hobby
The Watson is simply a longer antenna. It may pick up things your standard antenna cannot, but my experience is that these longer antennas simply make hearing the weak signals that are already there easier.
So no it is not just for longer distances & no it's not a silly question at all.

Hi,I use my 125xlt with a Watson 801 when out and about, but I think you'll find that the 881 will be too unwieldy/awkward at 15 inches for use at an airshow.
The signals are strong enough for you to use the supplied"rubber duck" at shows,I did so a couple of years ago at Cosford without any problems.
You'll find that some "walkman-type"earphones will also come in handy, given the amount of ambient noise at shows.

You could give the Watson W-901 antenna a try. It's shorter than the W-881 and is tuned specifically to provide best performance over the air band frequency range. Here is a link to one from Radioworld, or you could search eBay for something similar: https://www.radioworld.co.uk/w-901_airb ... al_antenna
