Is PMR446 specifically FM or AM?

Postby PleaseDontHertzMe » Sun Mar 23, 2014 1:24 pm

Hi,
I bought a Baofeng UV-5R scanner (it receives FM) and it can pick up parts of the VHF and UHF band. I'm thinking of buying a walkie talkie and I'd want to be able to communicate with my scanner (it can also transmit).
I know that the frequencies used for PMR446 are 446-447 MHz which is in the range of my scanner, BUT I don't know if an FM scanner would be able to pick them up as I don't know what modulation they us. I always thought that walkie talkies could be either AM or FM - in which case I'd be able to pick them up, but is this true?

They are FM or to be more specific NFM

Set your baofeng to 6.25 steps with the following 8 446 frequencies and it will work with any pmr446 radio

PMR 446 Channel 1 - 446.00625
PMR 446 Channel 2 - 446.01875
PMR 446 Channel 3 - 446.03125
PMR 446 Channel 4 - 446.04375
PMR 446 Channel 5 - 446.05625
PMR 446 Channel 6 - 446.06875
PMR 446 Channel 7 - 446.08125
PMR 446 Channel 8 - 446.09375

You will only find AM used nowadays in the civil and mil airbands or at hf below 30 MHz

Surely it isn't a scanner if it can also transmit??

Yes, these radios can scan a few preprogrammed frequencies, but they are not scanners, but transceivers & they are not legal to own or use unless the correct licence is held. Sadly some of the foreign sellers on ebay advertise them as scanners.
