Welcome to the forum
What radio & antenna are you using? I ask because that will make a difference to what you are looking for. A high antenna fed with quality Coax will hear & not loose lots more than a antenna in a bungalow loft, fed with poor quality, lossy coax.
And a handheld antenna that is often out & about with you gives you options that a base scanner does not.
The very best way to find stations that you can hear is to band scan. Listen between two set frequencies.
The real problem with scanning is that what you can hear is not exactly the same as what someone a few hundred yards away can hear. There are so many variables, that a database is a good starting point. But bandscans are the best.
Buy a database from Kimmy JS19 via http://ukscanningdirectory.co.uk/
Or do Google search of this forum via https://www.google.com/cse/home?cx=partner-pub-6291336405621919:2662881632
