Does anyone know the frequency for the Ballast cleaning trains?

Lots of frequencies used by different operators. Who's train and what area?

If anything at all, the staff will use 449's or 456's. Railway comms with very few exceptions are GSM.

No. It's much the same system as mobile phones.

I understand that the handfull of GSMR back to back channels have not been activated and were never intended for engineers trains in any event so the loco will use GSMR to talk to control but the crews almost always use UK Gen, SSL or even 446 but not GSMR.
