Uniden UBCD 3600XLT

Postby gadget11 » Wed Feb 01, 2017 12:21 am

Hello guys
I'm thinking of getting a Uniden UBCD 3600XLT

And I'm wondering if I get one from the States will it work here in the U.K.
As they seem to come preloaded with USA and Canadian frequencies

Thanks in advance

A Google search reveals this is a non-US version of the BCD436HP.

(Why the hell Uniden have to change the number AND the suffix for export versions I do not know.)

It does not come "pre-loaded"; you can download frequencies from the Radio Reference database.
The scanner and the database doesn't handle anything outside the US/Canada, so is virtually useless here in itself.

That said, the scanner has the capacity to store everything you want.
Every single business radio freq, every airband freq (it doesn't do 8.33 kHz bandwidth properly), every mil air freq.
Plus you can set your location, and location for each 'department', and get it to just scan nearby frequencies.
You can even connect the GPS puck, though that's not really hand portable.

Just requires a big learning curve, and lots of inputting.
I reserve the right to ignore people who have made no attempt to the read the manual, and expect others to do it for them.

I take it the radio is basically a 3500 with DMR capabilities and a few other mods? I like the look of it. If it programmes like the 3500, I'll find it not too difficult. I was considering a Whistler base / mobile, but the 3600 would be more versatile especially if it close call receives DMR.

That's like saying a Ferrari is basically a Fiat…

As a former trade plater who has moved a fair number of Ferrari's I assume you realise that could very easily be interpreted to mean the 3600 is extremely badly built, very unreliable & often bought by the kind of adults who want to get close to little boys.

I have a 3500, it's my second one, I wore out the first one, I'd rather the child reference wasn't used.

I've found these at least to refer to. Also this topic is in the wrong place.

If I'm being honest id say if the the firmware is the exact same as the usa version bcd-436hp scanner then I wasn't impressed with its receive and also you had to pay for the dmr addons and other formats etc which made it more costly , also the menu system was nothing like how easy the 3500 menu system is and closecall didn't work on dmr either which was annoying ..

I saw this scanner today on another site and thought i should come back to the forum and ask...

Can it scan digital (not tetra i know!) radios out of the box or not?

Failing that.. does ANY brand of scanner do digital in the same fashion as my 3500 does everything else, ie scan, find, listen. easy! :walkietalkie:

Can the Mods please move this thread to General Discussion?

So I can only really speak about the 3600's American cousin, the 436HP which looks virtually identical: the 436HP is advertised as having a DMR Upgrade available (at an extra cost). The ads for the 3600 imply it comes with DMR capability. I also note that you can't register a 3600 on Uniden's support website, which is a critical step to downloading the upgrade for a Provoice or DMR key. On that basis, I'd say it's highly likely (but not 100% confirmed) it comes with DMR out of the box. An email to one of the vendors would clarify it for you.

>does ANY brand of scanner do digital
Depends what you mean by digital. The most common form of digital is DMR. Several Whistler and Uniden BCDx36HP plus now the 3600s do DMR. Only the Whistler TRX1 and TRX2 currently decode NXDN, which is the 2nd favorite flavour of digital on the PMR bands. Note there is speculation Uniden might add NXDN to their BCDx36HP line. But it doesn't look like the same might apply to the 3600, given that you can't even register it with Uniden. You might want to consider that if you think NXDN will be important to you.

Respecting moj's personal opinion, I have found my 436 performs just as well if not slightly better than a Uniden 3500. I didn't find the menu too big a deal to get my head round. The Whistler is a different beast altogether, and IMHO both the software and user interfaces are horrible. It's a complete nightmare for searching for new frequencies, or programming on the go. Note Uniden's Close call technology will never work on a TDMA signal of such short timeslot duration (such as DMR simplex). It works fine on DMR repeaters.
