Can the Mods please move this thread to General Discussion?
I saw this scanner today on another site and thought i should come back to the forum and ask...
Can it scan digital (not tetra i know!) radios out of the box or not?
Failing that.. does ANY brand of scanner do digital in the same fashion as my 3500 does everything else, ie scan, find, listen. easy!
So I can only really speak about the 3600's American cousin, the 436HP which looks virtually identical: the 436HP is advertised as having a DMR Upgrade available (at an extra cost). The ads for the 3600 imply it comes with DMR capability. I also note that you can't register a 3600 on Uniden's support website, which is a critical step to downloading the upgrade for a Provoice or DMR key. On that basis, I'd say it's highly likely (but not 100% confirmed) it comes with DMR out of the box. An email to one of the vendors would clarify it for you.
>does ANY brand of scanner do digital
Depends what you mean by digital. The most common form of digital is DMR. Several Whistler and Uniden BCDx36HP plus now the 3600s do DMR. Only the Whistler TRX1 and TRX2 currently decode NXDN, which is the 2nd favorite flavour of digital on the PMR bands. Note there is speculation Uniden might add NXDN to their BCDx36HP line. But it doesn't look like the same might apply to the 3600, given that you can't even register it with Uniden. You might want to consider that if you think NXDN will be important to you.
Respecting moj's personal opinion, I have found my 436 performs just as well if not slightly better than a Uniden 3500. I didn't find the menu too big a deal to get my head round. The Whistler is a different beast altogether, and IMHO both the software and user interfaces are horrible. It's a complete nightmare for searching for new frequencies, or programming on the go. Note Uniden's Close call technology will never work on a TDMA signal of such short timeslot duration (such as DMR simplex). It works fine on DMR repeaters.
