SRBR, FRS & GMRS Frequencies

GMRS/FRS

GMRS/FRS are The US Equivalent of PMR446. High Power is available on the 462Mhz GMRS Channels (5watt) and half a watt on 467Mhz FRS Channels. These are not allowed to be used in The UK although are used in The UK due to being available widely on sites like ebay. These sets can be appealing to be people as they have more power and channels available then the UK PMR446 version however one or two of the frequencies have legitimate uses in The UK (Fire Service and On Board Ships) so using these radios may mean your transmitting on safety users frequencies so be advised. The frequencies are listed below...

Ch 1 GMRS/FRS 462.5625
Ch 2 GMRS/FRS 462.5875
Ch 3 GMRS/FRS 462.6125
Ch 4 GMRS/FRS 462.6375
Ch 5 GMRS/FRS 462.6625
Ch 6 GMRS/FRS 462.6875
Ch 7 GMRS/FRS 462.7125
Ch 8 FRS 467.5625
Ch 9 FRS 467.5875
Ch 10 FRS 467.6125
Ch 11 FRS 467.6375
Ch 12 FRS 467.6625
Ch 13 FRS 467.6875
Ch 14 FRS 467.7125
Ch 15 GMRS 462.5500
Ch 16 GMRS 462.5750
Ch 17 GMRS 462.6000
Ch 18 GMRS 462.6250
Ch 19 GMRS 462.6500
Ch 20 GMRS 462.6750
Ch 21 GMRS 462.7000
Ch 22 GMRS 462.7250

I know these frequencies are not for, and have never been for use in The UK and Europe but for some reason EARS PLC, who are a very big UK Radio supply company in London are now advertising that they are available in The UK and Europe. I was made aware of this and then checked on their site and they actually mention it on their home page...

According to them you can get a 5 year licence to use all 22 channels in Europe, this is a new one to me and Ofcom haven't announced it anywhere I can see?

I think EARS may have it wrong somehow, or at least they are not communicating the information very well, GMRS/FRS have never been allowed to be used in The UK before as we have the crummy by comparison PMR446 service and some of the GMRS/FRS overlap other users in The UK.

GMRS frequency 462.5625 is used by the Fire service which is GMRS Channel 1. They also use GMRS frequencies 462.5875 & 462.6375

They also use 462.5375 (which is close but not GMRS)

(Full list of UK Handheld Firefighter Frequencies here)

The 467 frequencies also overlap UK Media/Outside Broadcasting frequencies and on ship handhelds, this in itself must cause interference as American tourists are famous for taking their GMRS radios on cruises, ferries, holidays and such.

As far as I know GMRS/FRS radios can only be used in Canada (without a licence) or in The US (Licence needed for GMRS frequencies but not FRS). That being said, in Ofcoms new allocations there seems to be a gap from 462.5 to 463MHz although the usual allowance for ships and media is there on the FRS 467 channels. I've never heard of a 5 year GMRS/FRS licence for Europe before though and I'm sure they have it wrong?

Hi sorry to necropost on these topics, but I tested my 'PMR' Argos value radios and it turns out that they TX on FMR allocations!

Image

I have counted the following,

1= 467.250
2=467.2650
3=467.275
4=467.28750
5=467.300
6=467.312
7=466.9375
8=467.34375

is this right?

there is a youtube 'review' of these but the guy says they are PMR 446, so do Argos themselves- I did wonder why there was hardly any activity on them, a local Secondary School uses ch 7 at dinner time- thats about it.

No but I have also experienced this phenoma... The actual frequencies are as follows...

1 446.00625
2 446.01875
3 446.03125
4 446.04375
5 446.05625
6 446.06875
7 446.08125
8 446.09375

HOWEVER!... I have also noticed on my realistic scanners when I key up on said 446 frequencies that they also come through on 467 MHz frequencies... albeit not as clear. I do not know the maths but it is my guess that 467MHz is prone to image or breakthrough from 446MHz. Perhaps someone else could elaborate more...?
