so after 30 years i have now just got another cb only a handheld which i am looking to upgrade to a high gain aerial and also have opted for pmr with lpd channels, the advantage is that my aerial should be okay for using with pmr as it also transmits but will get a swr to make sure i don't blow the radio.

You got a CB> as in 27MHz, and a PMR446> as in 446MHz? LPD devices work in the 433MHz band - so I have no idea what you have?

They certainly won't let you share aerials - as they're totally different. A proper PMR446 won't let you connect an external antenna anyway, only the illegal ones will do that, and the few LPD radios that are available have very low power, and again no antenna connection. What are you hoping to do?

Ignore the allegations on advertising for CB antennas when it comes to so called gain. No base fed vertical CB antenna is ever going to have any meaningful gain over any other base fed antenna, other than via the angle of radiation. As some antennas radiate power more efficiently at the horizon & less at the sky. What most antenna manufacturers are referring to when they talk about gain is either a blatant lie or an alledged gain over an imaginary antenna.
If you want gain, then you will need a beam.
But what you can do is simply use a better antenna than the small telescopic antenna that CB's come with. Or if using it pedestrian portable, then use a tail, which is a length of wire under a screw into the chassis. The tail acts as a counterpoise & in effect gives the RF some grip, allowing it to make a more efficient jump out of your antenna.

jesus that was a bad choice to get back into the hobby ,the cb is really qiet now days ,you should of got a home base or a put it in your car !

nobody said i was sharing aerials if you read my post correctly and yes there are people on cb in my area.

the pmr is going to be used for something else.

You talk about CB and PMR and then say aerial (as in one) - to me, you have two radios and one aerial. If you don't explain properly, how is it my fault I misunderstood? So one responder thought you wanted a CB aerial with gain, I thought you wanted to share them - especially as you mentioned VSWR and 'blowing things up'.

As I said - if you buy a POMR446 radio the radio antenna is fixed.

By the way, bad taste is when you buy a pink car, or hang pictures of nude women in the local vicars house.

Let's start again - do you want a CB antenna or a PMR446 antenna, or a LPD antenna (forgetting two of these are illegal)

CB use like any other form of radio varies from area to area & CB's like most radios are 12 volt, so with a power supply can be used in the home or in a car.

That is what I read your post as meaning, but as that point had already been addressed, I did not repeat the good advice given re using a CB antenna on PMR 446.
