So i got an AA-600 off ebay to test my aerials and future custom ones, probably unnecessary but it was unused quality and a good price.
wish the AntScope s/w showed more frequencies on the bottom of the graph though.

Rubber Ducky

Center Loaded Whip closed
Center Loaded Whip Extended

Discone <- don't know the make, bought it from maplins shortly after Squidgygate.

Scanmaster B1300-N White stick

Chockblock copper dipole cut for Marine VHF

These confirm what my own experiments prove - so many antennas are actually just about OK at one frequency but absolutely poor at others. Look at the white stick vs the discone - the discone is resonant at so many frequency ranges in comparison. If you make the assumption that the theoretical gain claims can only occur at resonance, then the discone 0dB gain over the dipole is not a problem, it the lack of poor areas that makes it work. The dipole narrow plot looks pretty normal, showing the very gentle roll off. All the popular types show some very poor areas of performance. Looks like a useful purchase.

also shows why i was disappointed with the scanmaster and sits in the attic unused.

certainly makes life easier, had some mains copper wire and used a dipole calculator to get length for PMR 446MHz
but it was too long, trim a bit, test, trim a bit more, test.
