power & different frequencies

OK, odd question and have consulted Ham Radio For Dummies but to no avail.

Given optimum conditions using 5 watts which frequency should transmit further and more efficiently VHF 170(+) mhz or UHF 440(+) mhz

any thoughts?

totally dependant on band conditions if conditions are flat vhf will have greater range but under high pressure and tropo conditions it all depends on the skip distance . ducting can also be a factor

The UHF option gives scope for better gain antennas for similar size, so UHF has a small win there, but a VHF antenna has more capture area, being bigger which has another net positive? in practice - there's really little quantifiable difference outside the lab.
