Broadsword antennas on ebay

Postby m0lsx » Thu Mar 22, 2018 4:45 pm

I have just noticed two antennas on ebay by Broadswrd antennas.
The first is a Civil airband antenna & says..

The antenna is larger than my standard dipoles and comes in just under 4 feet.

I Don't make these dedicated Civ dipoles very often as they are quite large and postage on them is a little more than my normal poles.

The second antenna says..

This antenna is a general receiving dipole centred at 170.00mhz.
The antenna is 100cm .

100 Cm is 4.28 feet so LONGER than the Airband antenna.

Does anyone know what coax Broadsword uses ? His adverts simply say

The antenna comes with 5 mtrs of quality coax and a BNC connection

From the pictures it could simply be RG-58 which at Civil Airband is OK, but not good quality. Or it could be something decent.

And theres me thinking 100Cm is 1 metre which is approx 39" or 3ft 3inches

Im so glad I just stumbled across this post as I purchased one of these last year, ok it was only £18 plus postage but it was just a piece of 20mm conduit tubing with a straight 2.5 copper wire in it stripped from twin and earth household wire.
It didnt tune to any frequency on my aerial analyser as it had no ground plane or match at the base. It was sold as airband but swr was off scale on my analyser the whole way through the band.
It was mounted on my shed on a small pole as I gave it benifet of doubt, 2 weeks later it warped over from the sun

Broadsword calling danny boy?

It's as effective as a telescopic on a handheld - but higher up. If it's for receive, a random length usually works a bit. There are loads of these receive antennas around - none being good for TX, but they do receive things. A bit of wire in the sky, is a functioning antenna. Are they good antennas? No. Can you do better? Yes.

As any of us should be able to build the same thing for the cost of the parts - what exactly were you expecting?

I was at least expecting it to be partly resonant on the frequency it was sold for. The the earth/screening of the cable went to nowhere, just literally the centre core soldered onto a bit or 2.5mm copper going straight up. For no extra cost the seller could easily make this aerial resonant for airband.

For no more cost you could use a loading coil at the bottom making a simple 5/8 wave, introduce some turns of coax and make a 1/2 wave flower pot, and if going really cheap you could make a simple 1/2 wave dipole and run the coax back down the same tube (i know not ideal) :dizzy: :dizzy:
