Hi All,

I'm pretty new to this hobby, i've currently got a couple of handhelds that i use to listen to my local Airport and other frequencies i find on here. They are a Baofeng UV-5R and a TYT MD380, they both work really well.

Im looking at something else, i wouldnt mind listening to the military frequencies aswell, what would you all recommend to listen on?

Thanks
Kieran

You need a scanner capable of picking up AM transmissions to be able to listen to aircraft, civil and military.
I reserve the right to ignore people who have made no attempt to the read the manual, and expect others to do it for them.

Welcome to the forum.
Your current transceivers are very limiting from a spectrum coverage point of view & they are very slow & clunky for scanning more than half a dozen channels.
The 125 is certainly an excellent buy & as for the mobile antenna. I use a mico mag. Which is a dual band 2 & 70 amateur antenna. These cost less than £20 off ebay including postage & do not require anything else to get you on the air.
G4RMT favours a simple quarter wave Marine antenna. Again these can be brought cheaply off ebay.
Don't spend too much on an antenna. As everything we use is a compromise,as we listen to far too much spectrum for any antenna to cover, unless it's a real discone & you will not find a modern properly made discone & I am not sure anyone has ever made a decent mobile discone.
Some of the desktop so called discones with several verticals on top, are not anything like a discone, but they do make a very good static antenna, or a table top antenna. They have a weak magnetic base & are far too big to remain on a car at over about 30mph, especially with the poor magetic base that is fitted.

Thanks for the advice

Think i'll pick up a 125 with one of the Micro Mag antenna, whats the distance normally that you can pick up on them?

Distance is dependent upon a large number of things. First where you are & exactly where your antenna is situated in relation to objects such as buildings, hills, people, other vehicles etc around it. The nature of the path between your antenna & the transmitters antenna & then upon the frequency in use. The height of the transmitters antenna. the topography & objects around that & lots of other variables.
Now mix in the weather, the time of year, & several other bits. Things like are the trees in leaf, or is it raining or foggy. These can effect signals, especially UHF signals.
Someone with a handheld radio could be heard at 100 yards, not heard at 10 yards, or be crystal clear at well over a mile. There are so many variables, it is hard to talk about distance.
