A Warrenton man is charged with making false Mayday calls that sent the Coast Guard on several rescue missions. During a seven month period in 2016, the Coast Guard received 40 false Mayday calls.

35-year-old Bud O'Neil Burkleo is charged with making four of those calls. He also allegedly lied to investigators. Burkleo was released pending trial. A two-day jury trial is scheduled for June 1, 2018, before U.S. District Court Judge Michael W. Mosman.

Burkleo was arrested Friday morning in Warrenton without incident and made an initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge John V. Acosta, Friday afternoon in Portland.

In December 2016, the Coast Guard released recordings of three false mayday calls and asked for media and public support in finding the perpetrator. The tips received were forwarded to the Coast Guard Investigative Service.

Making a hoax Mayday call can be punishable up to six years in prison, a $250,000 criminal fine, a $5,000 civil fine, and restitution to the Coast Guard for the cost of the search.
