TYT MD380 Where to buy help...

Postby iScottybotty » Wed Oct 26, 2016 10:11 am

Could anyone recommend where to get a TYT MD380 from on UHF?

I'd prefer not to buy off eBay, just wondering if anyone has recently brought one and had a good experience.

Thanks all. Scott.

Can't seem to find this model on that web page. Perhaps they have discontinued this radio from their store?

The snag may simply be there's a new model out the MD-390, so the dealers aren't buying any more of the old model.

Yes, understood. That seems to be the likely reason.

MD390 then.

Basically I can't afford a Whistler at the moment so are looking for a cheap alternative to listen to DMR. I already have a UV5R which I use to find the digital frequency, I then want to be able to put that frequency into an MD380/90, manually find the colour code then hey presto.

Does anyone know, IF my local shopwatch/ city watch are DMR, and I get the MD380/90, so long as I find the colour code am I right in thinking I'll be able to listen? I'm reading so many conflicting threads I'm confused. Do these handsets pick up MOTOTebro or whatever it is? My understanding is that so long as they aren't encrypted all should be OK? Can anyone confirm?

I appreciate this is a long way around things but as I say, I can't afford a whistler right now and would be happy for the above method as I'm disabled, at home most days and it would give me something to do which I'd enjoy?
W
Thanks everyone.

They are not scanners! They scan really slowly, and scan between preset digital setups. They won't let you decode just anything - unless you risk one of the firmware fixes, and I'm not sure if there is one for the 390 yet that is reliable. They are comms radios, and perform pretty poorly as a scanner. Not really the same thing at all - AND - they're damn complicated and really need the computer to edit them!

I hear that, and I appreciate they aren't scanners but what they are is a handset capable of having hacked firmware and then capable of receiving DMR by entering already known frequencies, slots, CC's etc. . A cheaper option right now than £400+ for a whistler.

In addition, the Baofeng DM-5R now has a Tier ii upgrade so even more possibilities. Not a scanner ideally but it does the job of a scanner relatively well. All for $65.

But they don't? They scan a few channels quickly enough, but my 380 misses loads of business radio stuff because the transmissions are so short. Scanners do it so much quicker. Buy one and you'll regret not waiting for something better. I have two 380s and they rarely get used . They're nice radios but just not friendly to operate.
