It's not the simplest of jobs, being rather fiddly & requiring a lot of messing around. But the back light can be replaced & the part needed sometimes comes up on FB. This issue also effects the 2006. So search for both, when looking for parts & how to guides.

I've looked on eBay there all sold out ? Looks like I'm out of luck,it was working but dim even going dimmer with the switch but now it's not coming on at all could it' be a dodgy connector or is it just gone ?

It is a known & common issue. These scanners are now really old, but other than the display they are good radios.
There are alternatives to buying those backlights via ebay. It is all online, if you do some googling, it is all there.

I saw a YouTube video of someone modifying the backlight. They put in LED lights behind the display and diffused the light with pieces of white paper or card. Seemed pretty simple to do if you can't find the proper electroluminescent panel.

I watched that myself it worked in a way but I thought. The lights were to strong and you could see the lights more than the numbers ,I was hoping there was a way of just changing the screen but as I've read up realistic stopped making them ages a go , I was hoping for a site were they copied them some were but I can't find any links
