Fuse blowing. Bad wireing!

Postby timcooper55 » Wed May 25, 2016 4:22 pm

Hi All,
I have been trying to use my FT 8900 Moble in my caravan, but first time blew a fuse in my ciggarete
Lighter plug, then next time the plug started melting where it must have got too hot!
I am transmitting 10 watts.
I am wondering if it's to do with my wireing.
The two wires from the radio go to a small chocolate box connector.
Then the two wires, which are very thin, connect to the chocolate box to the ciggarete plug.
I'm wondering as these wires are thin, and I have trouble in connecting all the wire strands to it, that this could be causing
The problem .
Any ideas please?

Thanks

Tim

What rating is the wiring for the Cigarette Lighter socket?? I burnt the wiring on my car & that running within the cars alleged rating. When I stripped the burnt out wiring from the car, the wiring was probably never going to be up to the job, but as it was all melted & burnt, that was a guess.
My radio was on RX & smoke started pouring from behind my dash & since it happened to me, I have heard of several others who have had similar experiences.
Lighter sockets are not designed for running radios from. Radios really do need to be wired directly to the battery with a fuse on both wires & using wire that exceeds what you are asking of it.

Thanks for reply.
I can't tell you the actual rating of the wire, but it is very thin .
Guess I will have to wire to battery direct with a fuse.

Thanks Again

Possibly a bit late with this reply but when I fitted wiring for my 50W Yaseu, I actually treated the wiring up to the cabin of the car as if I was fitting a 250w per channel car stereo amplifier., then I used an extra fuse box again designed for car audio in the car that I connected the radio to . Stick to the radio manufacturer's recommended fuse rating, they are there for a reason
Know more than I can disclose.
