Spoke to an old ham friend who like me came back to thew hobby recently after years away. He's discovered a huge upsurge in CW, and it's now the only mode he uses, and he suspects that people are turning to it because it packs more activity into a smaller area, making contacts easier to make. The digital modes also make the non-CW sectors appear very busy, with the buzz saw noises tending to hide weaker USB/LSB activity. He figured CW, no longer a requirement, would be dead and discovered that's very far from the truth.
