The pc boards on the link above look very interesting especially as dsd or other dmr radios will not pick up d star unless it is an icom radio.....

They boast that...

Using the DVRPTR_V1 board and a computer (PC or Raspberry Pi) you can create a D-STAR hotspot which will give D-STAR users "over the air" access to the network from the comfort of their armchair or around their QTH with a D-STAR compatible handheld.

The DVRPTR_V1 boards are successfully used around the world to build
D-STAR compatible repeaters, more versatile and much cheaper than their ICOM counterparts.

These robust and low-cost boards are a great incentive for many hams to start experimenting with the digital modes.

The DVRPTR_V1 North American boards are assembled, individually tested and shipped worldwide from Montreal, Canada.

So does this mean that for about £70 (as the price is $90.00 USD for the Board, assembled and tested) you can not just tune in on but also run your own d-star station repeater ?

Also i have been looking at the DV Dongle here http://www.dvdongle.com/

which boasts....

Each D-Star radio includes an AMBE2020 voice compression chip provided by Digital Voice Systems, Inc (DVSI). The DV Dongle includes an AMBE chip and logic to connect it to a USB port on a PC or Mac. This allows the computer to “speak” the same voice protocol as D-Star. The DVTool software connects to participating gateways and encodes/decodes the voice using the DV Dongle.

Which is the best buy ?

My motive here is i would like to listen to d-star and in the future transmit on it when i get my licence but i do not have the money to spend on fancy icom radios ?

As I understand dead star, it will log you into the system even if you are only a SWL. Thus you may find that you are accused of pirating..

Dead star is simply over priced digitised FM & not a big step forward in evolution. It is just an ordinary VHF/UHF radio with a variation of skype/echolink bolted on. It has not been designed for SWL's to use, so is transmit capable all the time.
