Struggling Newbie

Postby VictorB » Sat Apr 18, 2020 2:13 pm

Hi everyone,
I'm a flight sim enthusiast and bought a Uniden EZI33XLT to listen ATC. I'm living 16 miles to Heathrow and upgraded the aerial with Watson W-889 (using it fully extended). I have added Heathrow Tower Frequnecies (118.505 and 118.705)* and Radar (125.625) to my instant channels. I'm checking all three and scanning whole Air range (Band 1, Sql 2) but still all I can get is nothing. Am I doing something wrong?

* 118.505 is recorderd as 118.500 and 118.705 is recorded as 118.700. Somehow I can't enter exact frequencies.

the exact frequencies are 118.500 and 118.700 118.505 and 118.705 are the channel designations for the exact frequencies . Your EZ133 is correct

Airband VHF signals follow the line of sight rule so at 16 miles you will probably not hear the ground transmitters and depending on your terrain and buildings between you and the transmitter sites you may struggle to hear them . you should be able to hear the aircraft in the sky but if you are using a handheld inside a building you may even struggle to hear them too . A good outside antenna as high as is possible is required. Have you tried to hear the ATIS transmissions (121.9333 as these are continuous and give a good guide as to whether you can hear the ground TX sites ? You may also get better results on the approach frequencies rather than the tower frequency

If you are scanning the whole airband 118-137Mhz you will miss a lot of transmissions due to the time it takes to scan through all possible channels (2400, so with a scanrate of 30 ch per sec it takes 80 seconds to scan them all)and the duration of ATC transmissions which is often only a few seconds so landing on the right channel at the right time is very hit and miss.

You may need to get your head around the difference between scanning and Searching to understand this .

Just a thought, a common new user error is having the set on FM mode instead of AM!
