Transistor demonstrated 23rd Dec 47.

Postby m0lsx » Sat Dec 23, 2017 1:12 pm

23rd December 1947. The transistor was first demonstrated by Walter H. Brattain and John Bardeen to their higher-ups at Bell Laboratories. A microphone and headphones were connected to the transistor, and the device was actually spoken over "with no noticeable change in quality" as Brattain wrote in his notes about that day. The name transistor came from its electrical property known as trans-resistance. The inventors shared the 1956 Nobel prize in physics for their work. The transistor replaced the bulkier vacuum tube, and was referred to as the electronic engineer's dream.

Thanks for that Alan,I know that transistor radios in my teen years early 1960s made life nicer, being able to carry my music around with me was great.
Also listening to dear old Radio Luxembourg in bed with an earpiece late at night,I think the signal fading in and out was part of it's charm, though frustrating at the time when listening to a favourite pop song.
